Virgin holidays

Creating a rockstar travel experience for VIP customers

Project overview

Devised to give Virgin Holidayers a taste of Rockstar Service before their flight. A row of 10 advertising screens on the walkway at Gatwicks South Terminal were customised to respond to RFID tags built into Virgin customers luggage tags.

These would dynamically update customers with the latest flight information, location specific tips and up to date weather creating a 100ft long, tailor-made, personal experience for VIP Virgin customers.

Role:
Lead designer and front end build: Visual design, animatio, co-ordination and development of the front end build in AS3.0

The approach

As lead designer on the project my involvement was to co ordinate the creation and build of the application responsible for selecting and display relevant and up to the minute information to the customer;

Each of the 10 screens was controlled by an xml feed generated on the fly and refreshed every hour. The feed used current time, flight and weather information to select and display the correct messaging at the correct time to the correct customers.

RFID chips built into customers luggage tags allowed us to display personalised information on their travel.

Defining the style

Designed to mimick the motion of a flight board each of the messages was built up of seperately animating letterforms positioned pefectly using bespokely built kerning tables.

Each of the messages was supported by a unique image, curated specifically for for the message content.

There were hundreds of messages, each supported by curated photography.
