Virgin Media

Bringing the stadium into your living room

Project overview

Created as an innovative second screen app for the thousands of casual football fans across the country. Sofa Stadium allowed users to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a live stadium while watching live premiership games at home.

Using up to the second live data feeds, Sofa Stadium allows users to discuss the game with fellow fans, react to events, view live stats and vote on key match incidents as they happened.

Role:

The visual style

As lead designer and front end developer on the project my initial input was on developing the visual style and UI design. Taking a direction from sports broadcasting with a distinct Virgin Media flavour the UI style balanced the intricate visual approach with the ability to handle large amounts of data.

The defined UI style was supported by 3D renders of players, fans and a living room with a pitch which gave the app an immersive gamified approach.

RFID chips built into customers luggage tags allowed us to display personalised information on their travel.

Building a working UI

Once the style of the UI had been defined the next phase was to build it into a working web app. Built to run on Adobe Flash my task was to create and code the top level interactive layer, providing animated feedback and up to the minute data to the users.

The outcome

Through this activity, Virgin Media was able to collect data and engage with customers and prospects around its Sports TV content and its internet broadband services.
